Help finding info on my old Kajukenbo instructor?
« on: January 30, 2006, 06:16:40 AM »
I stumbled across this board looking for Kajukenbo information online, and it seems to be the only hope to find what I'm looking for.

I practiced under Simo Beth Bailey from 1992-1996 and was a purple belt when I quit. Her school was located in McMinnville, Oregon.

It's been so long, I don't remember anything about her place in the family tree, and can find no mention of her. I do seem to remember that she knew Sifu Tim Gagnier and Sifu Rick Cropper.

I've been wanting to get back into Kajukenbo for a couple years now, but unfortunately I'm stationed in Utah with the USAF, and there are no schools here.

If anyone could give me any information it would be much appreciated.

After a bit more searching, I found this page:

http://parkersounds.com/nwkajukenbo/blackbeltclub.html

Si-gung Beth Bailey is mentioned as a member of the Black Belt Club, but I can't find any other info.

I do remember that when i was training there, Sifu Virgil Royer attended quite a few of our classes. I seem to remember him making black belt back then.

Hello Sir,

My name is Trent Junker.  I was a student of Sigung Beth's teacher, Sigung Sid Lopez.  I have contact with Sigung Beth and have her number.  Contact me and I can reconnect you with her.  I will, of course, ask her permission before giving you her number, after I talk to you.  I sure it would not be a problem.  She still teaches, but not much anymore.  She has a couple of Sifus under her now and they handle most of the teaching.  In fact, I just saw them day before yesterday at a tournament here in Portland.

Sifu, thank you for the quick reply. I'm not sure that I'd have much to talk about if I did contact her, more just wondering if she was still around and if anyone knew her.

When I had to quit, I felt really bad, but my parents wanted me to concentrate on high school at the time. The last couple years I've really wnated to get back into Kajukenbo, but being in the military, I've been unable to find a school.

I'm not even sure if Sigung Bailey would remember me, it's been almost 10 years. If you see her, or talk to her, could you mention my name?

I had one more question, but it might be better suited for the other forums. Since I can't find a school here, and I highly doubt there are any where I'm transferring to in Korea, it would be great if I could train on my own a bit. I prefer books to videos, but haven't seen any on Kajukenbo. Is there anything you might recommend?

Thanks in Advance.

When I talk to Sigung Beth, I will mention you.  As for books, I know of very few.  I believe there are some written in Spanish by GM Angel Garcia, though I have never seen them.  There is one by Frank Conway, a self defense one by Eric Lee (older one, even has old pics of GM Forbach in it), and a book by William Beaver - a Kajukenboist in Kuwait.  Oh, there are also some Kenpo books by Sam Allred - a Kajukenboist.  Those are all I know of.

Holy Cow!!! I'm so lucky to have just been reading about this. I was just telling my Sifu the other day I need to get back into training. Wow. Kajukenbo in Kuwait?! Who would of thought!!! Just what the doctor had ordered. I am really out of shape and the stress level hear is pretty large due to having to work more than 60 hrs. a week and being in a foreign land. I'm hoping to contact this school tomorrow. I believe the school is called Black Belt Institute run by William Beaver. I don't really know much about Sifu Beaver. I guess I'll get to know him soon. Thank you all for this info especially envisiontj and my hometown Sifu Morg for starting this string.

Good to see you again Sifu Morg. This is all to wierd for this to be happening. I guess I'll have to change plans. I was thinking of transferring to Iraq. I need my behind to back in training. It will be good to see Kajukenbo again. It's been a while.

If anyone else is in Kuwait who happen to want to get back into training or is looking for a Kajukenbo school here is the information:

The Institute - The Black Belt Institute is located at: Block 6, Street 5, Building 20, in Salmiya, Kuwait.
Opened in 1993, BBI offers instruction in the American martial art called kajukenbo, (street self-defense).
Our telephone and fax number is country code 965, 571 1553.
You can also email us at institute@overseasdigest.com
We have classes available five nights each week.
Our style, kajukenbo, is especially for street self-defense.
All classes are taught by qualified black belts.

I just googled this info. Hope this helps for anyone who is looking to train in one of the best Street Self Defense training possible.

A thought just occurred. I don't have my gear here. Hmmm. I guess I will have re-gear.

Muhalo all.

Ooops, sorry, I guess I mixed up a string my hometown Sifu had written and this one. He didn't start this string.

Well, here's an update. I found that the phone number no longer reaches Mr. William Beaver and the email address that I had sent to him inquiring about the school just returned. What a bummer. Does anyone know Mr. Beaver or is he even still in Kuwait? Thanks all.
