Then please accept my apology for any misunderstanding you had with our instructors, and be assured that we do not teach Kajukenbo.  I would like to see the flyer that claims we teach Kajukenbo.  I am available at the times listed or I can come to you.

For the record Mr. Martin I am not attacking your school or system. I happen to cross train twice a week with a few people from the Cepeda school (Kenpo & Arnis). My point was that when I checked out your school and you did allow walk in's cause i just "walked-in" and i watched the Kenpo instrcutor teach a few disarm tecniques to the students. I was puzzled because i was expecting to see Kenpo / Kajukenbo and to my surprise i witnessed Krav Maga. It was only then that I questioned the instructor. that is when he informed me of his "openess". I also am sure that you know the the "Dojo raid" was mean't as a joke.

I am also not attacking you and have tried to have a measured tone about this.  What you are describing does not sound like my school.  We always allow walk ins.  We allow participation from walk ins.  It is our school policy.  Again, I would love to have the flyer you described.  I'm not producing it.

Verrrrry Interrrrresting!

I like that there has been evoked this explanation
and discussion of the very controversy the Thread
first warned of.  The defense of Mr Martin's school
has been very eloquent and respectful.  Palma's
assertions continue to be articulated, nonetheless.
So, I hope there's a resolution from this.  It probably
is a case of some instructor being over zealous about
the kajukenbo inspiration of some martial expressions
exhibited by the school, wherein a walk-in hears of
it, yet unbeknownst to the owner of the school.  A
misstep, mishap, perhaps?  Anyway, it's good that the
two parties have come forth toward each other regarding
all this!  All in the spirit of Budo !   It's all cool.

What I was afraid of was that the suspect school would
ignore the issue -- and thereby show guilt.  But it's clear
from Mr Martin's responses that nothing ill or wrongminded
was intended.  That's all that really counts.  So, we'll call
off that group visit. LOL...    ::)

Mr. Bishop
THank you for that pic. That must be mid 70's?? I was Sifu Dan's first Black Belt. It's so nice to see Chief young.

Palma I am one of the Instructors at Brand X. There must be some misunderstanding what was said. Our history has been influenced by kajukenbo as Mr Bishop pointed out. Cheif AL Tejero actually brought breaking to our School and Art. We also have a few Instructors Certified in Krav Maga. Which I believe have some of the best weapon defenses. We would encourage yourself and others to come up and check out or school. We will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Respectfully Sifu Dan S.

In all fairness, we shouldn't judge Brand X Martial Art's style as "soft" like most of you had written. I have trained with a few Chinese Kenpo people of the same lineage as Jeff Martin's Brand X school. They were not from his respectibve school, but they had trained with the Cepeda style  and I can assure you that they are as tough as nails. The video on therir website doesn't honestly depict their true training cirriculm.

What an article, I had heard that this KM Association was going through a legal battle with individuals using their name or likeness. I couldn't picture this happening to the system I study.

It is my understanding trademarks are valid as long as they have useful economic life. They are not to be confused with copyrights or patents. When I was studying business law back in the late 1980s early 1990s, copyrights were for the life of the creator plus 50 years and patents were for 17 years. Trademarks have an indefinite life. Of course this is based on my memory which seems to get worse with age.

In addition, I am pretty sure the lives of the different non physical assets (i.e., trademark, copyrights and patents) have been changed. I remember some scuttlebutt about the extension of the lives several years back, but since I am not an attorney I did not pay too much attention to it.
