Looking for info on an old 70's style (Budo Jujitsu?)
« on: June 14, 2006, 06:47:25 PM »
   Hello:
This is my first post to the Kajukenbo Cafe. I am very interested in Kajukenbo, but the closest I can get to it is thru the internet, and thru DVD's/Videos. I live near Minneapolis, MN...A town that is ruled by American Sport Karate franchises.

My first post here is actually not related to Kajukenbo. I am looking to see if anyone else remembers a video of a karate system that was around in the 70's (Maybe early 80's) It was an amalgamated style, somewhat akin to Kajukenbo, but a little more "Hollywood". Along with the instruction for the style, they also had fight scene vignettes in between segments. "Judo" Gene Labell was the bad guy in these little demonstration clips.

I think the name of it was Budo Jujitsu, or Budoshin Jujitsu. The style was a mix of Judo/Jujitsu, Kenpo, Aikido, and some kick boxing. There was a guy who was the creator of the system, and Benny "the jet" Urquidez and his brother were 2 of the students on the tape. Also, there was a Kenpo guy, I think might have been Steve Sanders?

Does this ring a bell with anyone? I am trying to see if the style survived, or morphed into something else. Mostly just curious I guess. More of a trivia situation than a search for a system.

Anyway, thanks for the time, and I am truly enjoying reading all of your posts.

Your probably talking about the late Al Thomas of "Budo Jujitsu".  He was in the So. Cal. area and hung out with some kenpo guys like the late Dave German.  If you do a google search you might find some copies for sale of the video he made with some local So. Cal martial artists.

That is exactly right. I knew someone would know on this site. You Kajukenbo people are very knowledgeable in the history of the martial arts.

That is exactly the video I was talking about Mr. Bishop. I appreciate your help. Something just reminded me of that tape today. It was my first exposure to a blended system. I am sure were I to view it now, It will look a little weak? It was odd seing all those black belts studying under Mr. Thomas. I had never even heard of him.

Thank you again. I will try to stay more on the Kajukenbo subject moving forward...Ric

Ha.  Don't know about that.  Master Thomas's best salute was getting everyone to submit by grinding them through the floor with his calloused ribs, elbows, fingers, etc.
I was searching Google to see if anyone was practicing his style, and found this thread.  I hope you don't mind me sharing some information about my limited experience with Master Al.

Some of the "new" cage fighting reminds me of parts of Budo Jujitsu.  Because of it's nature and founder, the "style" never became well known.  Even in the seventies, when I went to many dojos for some practice, people thought I was doing Kung Fu, Aikido, or who-knows-what.  Master Thomas had that Bruce Lee philosophy of "whatever works".  Combined with his superb Jujitsu skills, his open-ended training proved very effective and practical.  Techniques were taught for specific styles of opponents like boxers, Kenpo, Shotogan, Kung Fu, etc..  Hard strikes in conjunction with throw, nerve and submission techniques works pretty darn well in real life.  The man was unique and his art was superb.  He should not be forgotten.
