I attended a very upbeat, but solemn funeral service for Grandmaster "Blue", or "General", as some of us knew him. He may not have been directly under our tree, but this man had a beautiful Ohana and legacy of his own.
There were words of encouragement and inspiration from former NFL player, now minister and martial artist Doug Jones.
Also sharing some stories and experiences were Professor "Sweet" Pete Salas - I'm down with 'dis braddah!! He had some funny stories about a very funny, passionate and strong man, and "Chief" Sianco sharing some great road trip stories and times going to Hawaii with "General".
I think the bottom line on my experience and thoughts is this:
Those of the times when men like Sijo, and "General" were growing, learning and living the days when our arts were but fledglings in America are dwindling in numbers. If you (or me too) have the chance to get around these men, spend some time and hear their stories, do it. There's more to these artists than their respective arts. It's the people who leave the legacy, and those they loved, trained and lived around who carry on their memory. Whether it's an older Professor or Grandmaster or even a humble Sifu who's been around from that past time, get some time - make some time to be around them. But, don't waste the gift and ask and talk, better yet, just listen.......
.....you might just be amazed and enlightened (or just get a great laugh!!) from these great folks, and I'm sure they would appreciate the aquaintance. It's worth it.
That's my take on the passing of another wonderful artist from his Ohana.
I represented the Kajukenbo Ohana with Sigung Rodney Alo and Sifu Kathy Evans.
It was my honor to be there.
