kajukenbo Black Book
« on: January 15, 2003, 07:11:46 PM »
I will like to ask any Instructor if they have a kajukenbo Black Book? My Teacher 10 degree Ortega of PR, Has One, that it was given to him, by his teacher, He told me that there are very few Masters that can translate (understand) the techniques that appears in it. I did see the book when I was in my 20 years old. I will like to know if in fact was hand written first and than edited by Sijo Emperado and his Brother Joe Emperado? Kajukenbo for Ever ;D

Aloha Sigung Ray ! its nice to hear from you my friend. In reference to your question about the Kajukenbo Black book. There are several around the country, what we would call "original ones" thats because notes were kept by mostly  all of schools of the early "post palama expansion" the text of the techniques were written in the "language used by that instructor, so in order to know what the techniques were, one would have to generally be familiar with that instructor and his school . My e-mail is the same drop me a line sometime.

Aloha nui

Though this is not in the line of the original question on this post -
Encourge/Require that your students keep there own note books from the beginning.  Once you have trained for a couple of years, it will be impossible to remember all the knowledge you have aquired.  It would be a shame to lose something valuable and not have it to pass to future generations because you didn't write it down.

I have to agree with you Mel. Shoot I forgot so much... I used to keep a notebook when I was coming up in MA but lost it between Hawaii and some place? I 've tried to encourage some of my student to write down things that they learn, most of them don't, they will regret it when they are older, I think.

Since I've been teaching I have had to rely on memory, re-write what I remember, techniques come back to me when a student says, "What would you do if I do this?" Muscle memory takes over and the students ends up on the ground and wanting them to teach the technique.

I actually like being questioned about technique because it jars my memory.

I just wanted to respond to let you know that what you posted is very important (at least to me).

Thanks - Jim

Aren't you glad we live in a computer age now?  It's so easy to record things and have a modestly safe place to house them.

Hi to all
But you are missing the point!!
the Black book in kajukenbo is not the one that most of us have written while in training, Is a book that has the original kajukenbo techniques that was written by the founders. I know that we all have the tech..... in paper, but I also know that most of us have techniques that are not from the original kajukenbo but a combination of them from the first old students of the founders. ???
