There IS no other side to that story! A woman was getting beaten by a man in public. I don't care what his motive was, he can explain it after he comes to from being knocked the F@#$ out by me! Certain lines you just don't cross!

An example of the other side of the story is that there were no other people on the train.  What numbers were mentioned in the story? 10? 15? More than a dozen ?  Maybe the real number is zero.  Perhaps a few women, all of whom are conditioned that only men, even those with families, do the brave sorts of things such a risk their life to help a stranger in return for a perhaps a few words of thanks.  Other examples of the the other side of the story include that the man attacked her in a few seconds and left the train promptly or that her pimp beat her up near the train, so she boarded without a ticket to escape and came up with the idea for fat cash from a lawsuit against a corporation.  The readers assume the woman is telling the truth that a stranger beat her up for little reason even though the article is careful to cite the details along with phrases such as "A woman says she was ..." and "the woman claims ..." "According to the woman ..."  It may not have even been a real story.  If the victim were a man, we probably would never have read about it due to its lack of newsworthiness.

That said, I'll side with the woman's story and say that I would probably "step up" in such a situation.  If I'm on a plane with terrorists, there is no way I'm crying in my seat while the machine goes down.

Careful now Gints! That's dangerous thinking you got going on there. Better watch it and just ride the chest-thumping chivalrous bandwagon like a good little soldier. You don't want people thinking that you would let a woman get abused right in front of you now do you?

Joel please post your school, real name etc..., thanks

I have jumped in the boat on many occasions....for the most part I have been lucky enough to not get injured....well some stitches.....but it has Always helped....I can't imagine standing by if you have even a remote chance to help.....what kind of people are we that we would watch someone be a victim if we can help..... My students have helped people, and a core value in my school is always have your friends back.....Gints  would you be there if I needed help and you were there?  Would I back you up......I don't worry about you jumping right in.
Now most of the times I helped is was a person I never had seen and sometimes they didn't even say thank you...but what can you do, you help to help and hope they learn the lesson to help others.....

Careful where you tread James......

Always :)

Anyway, excuse me for finding it irritating that people equate my acknowledgment that there is probably more to the story in some way shape or form with me supposedly standing by while a woman gets beaten. It's beyond insulting, and I certainly know that no one would have the testicular fortitude to dare say that to my face, especially given the complete lack of foundation of the statement.

James I was referring to the chest thumping comment and I think most here would say what they thought to your face...
Do you really think Gints would have fear to not speak his mind to your face or myself for that matter ?....
Is that what you are saying or am I reading this wrong?

I was not commenting on Gint's statement, in fact I agree with what he said 110%. I was commenting on how he said essentially the same thing I did, and was warning him that the vultures were about to come and peck at him for not just accepting one person's side of the story without question simply because that person was a woman.

As for yourself saying what you feel, I don't doubt it in the least. But then again, I've never seen you make unfounded and insulting statements towards anyone.

No need to apologize, I can see where the misunderstanding came about. I tend to respond with sarcasm rather than outright anger, and it's often that it is misconstrued by others involved in the conversation. My fault there for not being clear.

James, the point I was making was that whatever the reasons involved with the woman getting beaten, that is the only side to it in a situation like that. You deal with the other stuff afterwards and don't stay out of it and rationalize not getting involved to yourself saying that you don't know the other side of the story. If that's not what you meant, then your statement was off topic IMO.

I never said that there was any reason whatsoever that would make it ok. I never said that I personally wouldn't jump in to help (something that I HAVE done on a few occasions at parties and local bars). I was saying that it seemed fishy that the story only covered the victims description of the story, and that there was probably more to it.

As for who's on or off topic, I'd argue that your point was more off-topic than mine. You're saying that you would have jumped in to help? What does that have to do with the point of the article? Prof. Bishop posted this as an example as to why you need to learn to defend yourself, in the sense that any random wacko may try and grope and harm you even in public. If the woman was -as Gints had suggested in his list of possibilities- a prostitute, then I'd say the moral of the story is, stay out of that line of work, and don't associate with those kinds of people rather than learn self defense for trolley assaults.

Okay. If the story was fake and did not happen like it was reported, then there was nothing to get involved with in the first place. Assuming that the woman was getting beaten (for whatever reason) on a train full of "men" then what I said stands. Help first; sort out later. At any rate, I don't thnk most of us would stand around while it happened. Not even James. ;)
