Hey Frank, I know you said you were 58, but keep in mind, 50 is the new 20, so you are more like 28 by today's standards. Ain't it great to be young again!

I just used the word token literally, where the item represents the proficiency.

Well put, Professor.

Pat

EVERY martial art has its good points and not so good points. That's what Kajukenbo is trying to fix by not "staying inside the box". As far as rank...I always say: We never deserve the rank our teacher gives us. It is a reminder that we must work "into" that rank and BECOME that rank. That makes us (I hope) work harder to improve ourselves and your students.
Sometimes I would just like to work without a belt, my students, too, and just come in and share what we all know. I have learned lots from Dr. Bono, Ron Esteller, Tom Theofanopoulos and others in Gaylord's Method. Oh, and from other teachers of styles like Small Circle Jujitsu, Kyusho Jitsu, Shaolin Gongfu etc...those who were willing to share with me. I only question one or two people's "inflated" and perhaps "bought" rank, but who really cares?  I do what I do, and I look forward to many more years training with my Kajukenbo family. I'm now 58, so maybe I have 20 more years left!

This thread is about super-sizing ranks.  No matter how titles are justified, there is an opposition to long titles in this modern culture.  If they are needed within an organization to designate rank beyond stripes on the belt, I suspect there would be greater comfort with common business titles such as Manager, Vice President, President.  Even corporations have let titles get out of hand both at the top and low levels, as well as allowing the swelling at the top end with tons of Vice-Presidents that typically survive all layoffs.  Recently, at ATT, I spoke to a Customer Satisfaction Account Representative.  That's a clerk, right?

Prof., the moderators will be looking into who moved your post, and why since it didn't name anyone in particular.
Also, being a professor you have access to the "senior black belt" section where you can discuss things a little more candidly.

If there are any problems with a post, the poster should be notified before it is moved or deleted, or at least within minutes of deleting or moving it.  That is common courtesy, and would allow the poster to edit their message per the list rules if any where broken.  Why cause undue stress and concern when there should be none.

I MOVED THE POST, QUESTIONS? WHY? RESPECT or lack thereof.  This is a discussion that belongs among the most senior of our black belts, not for open discussion.

Prof. Ron, you and I have discussed this in the past. This is NOT the place to take it. Nothing can be handled here, take it to the seniors.

I did not explain myself because I haven't figured out the best way to handle it, that's all.

Rob,

You're decision was right.  There's a lot of bad feelings here that need to handled elsewhere.

You know these questions of rank come up all the time in all systems, and on many forums.  You see people being challenged on why they got promoted faster then the norm (if there is one), or why they were promoted ahead of someone else.
If someone hasn't promoted themselves, or gone to a diploma mill, the one that should be questioned is the person making the promotion.  Instructors have a great responsibility when it come to issuing rank.  Their the one's who make the promotions that represent the requirements of their system, organization, and school.  These promotions will stay with the student for the remainder of their life, and reflect back on the system, school, and instructor as long as the student lives.
