MMA: more violent fighting
« on: May 20, 2008, 01:31:28 PM »
Why do you think MMA is surging in popularity?  In an age of litigation and Ritalin, why does a small portion of society demand more violence when other trends are pacific in nature (more yoga, longetivity, etc.)?

Counter acting the metrosexuals

Right on, I'd say.   I've been doing some reading on the history of manhood.  Apparently, the urbanization of the American man and the respective loss of masculine identity was responsible for the surge in the popularity of boxing, fraternal orders, etc. in the earlier part of this century.

I think it appeals to the very foundation of the alpha male. Competition, rivalry, dominance. Plus all the cool tattoos and ring girls. I think the UFC has excelled like it has due to catering to the audience and the target age group. For some reason tho, my Grandfather still watches pro wrestling..

Plus Chuck Liddell's mohawk is way cooler than Namaste yoga on fit tv..
