head butts
« on: September 21, 2009, 01:14:26 PM »
i've been noticing here in england, one of the favorite first moves is a head butt to the bridge of the nose.to gain the advantage.i saw a couple of blokes get into a bit of an argument at work. the one guy must of had enough of the squabble, head butted the other guy. that was it end of game. any thoughts on a defense? respectfully, phil

Don't get close enough for a head butt.  :)

If I have to be that close to a potential attacker and he attempts a head butt attack then just move out of the way on the way to attacking him. ATTACK-ATTACK-ATTACK. Train it and live it!

you should never let anyone close enough to head butt you.
when you have a problem with someone you need to make space between the two of you.
never let them get past an arms length from you.
if someone is in your face they are way to close.
they can knee you in the groin, poke you in the eye, head butt and so on.
in the night club I would just rub my hands together in front of my body.
it is not a combative stance but you can fire the 1 inch punch or just bring your hands forward to keep them back.
I know it works, it was one of my best moves for years.

i always teach my students, don't let ANYONE get close enough to touch you, EVER!!!!!! no one has the right to touch you, you want to talk, talk from where you are, i can hear just fine, but i always give the warning, don't take another step forward!!! i automatically assume that you mean me harm if you approach me, especially when its a heated moment.

I agree with all of the above - "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."  But if they telegraph and/or you sense it coming try to get offline just enough to save your face, reach around the back of their head and help redirect their nose to your shoulder.

Head butt is an awesome tool, it should be a face butt, top of your head to their face.....great in the clinch, off an entry or when more then one guy closes in....the most deadly weapons we own are in trapping range, elbows, knees and the head..nothing like a hard bone hitting a soft delicate spot.....GT

The Headbutt is a big gun (elbows and knees are the other two) meaning they are devastating and fight enders.  The other thing about the Headbutt is instead of using the forehead or the top of the head use your horns (the area on you forehead just above your eyebrows).  When using this part of your head it puts you in line with your shoulder line which I consider one of the strongest lines structurally.  As an example the punch or grab comes in - make your destruction/block/etc so you are positioned on the inside -turn your upper torso perpendicualr to your opponents shoulder line BEFORE you step in - tuck the chin slightly, aim your horn, then step in and BAM! Very powerful for sure.

Anyway just some thoughts.

The reason I said top of the head if possible was because when you head butt the nose, you usually get blood...if the strike is forehead...above the eyes, blood in the eyes, makes a tough fight for you.  The top of your head is far enough away, some of us have hair to stop the blood, and also you can use your legs to thrust upward while pulling their head down, as oppose to using primarily the neck.   I have used the forehead with great success though, but I was in a clinch that I didn't expect and had no choice....teeth marks in the forehead as pretty.......lets say funky....

Well, I wouldn't run in close enough to someone to use head butts, knees or elbows, but if someone attacked me in an elevator or other close quaters situations before I realized they were a threat, thay are very powerful tools.

Funny how many people wrote that, but the assumption there is you knew the person was about to attack you.  Also that maybe you trying to get there to use the close trapping range yourself.  I haven't seen or been in many fights that stayed at kicking range for long.  It takes a step from boxing range to trapping.....people get the clinch to the takedown All the time and the trapping range is that 3rd range before the ground....

The question is could you really stop the entry of a skilled fighter.....with out sprinting the other way.......

Well, we do train to prevent the entry of skilled fighters but relying on being able to do that in any given situation is assuming that Murphy (of Murphy's Law fame) is on vacation, which is never a smart thing to do. The various ranges and how to move in and out of them as well as how to defend them are extrememly important to train in. Better to have it and not need it, than the other way around.

Absolutely!  You have to be prepared for the worst.......be good in the 4 ranges and try to force the fight to your best range....I don't have the hardest head....though some may disagree, but the head butt I think I have nailed down......being a DC I need to save the hands when I can.... ;D
