« on: May 30, 2012, 04:02:35 PM »
Good afternoon everyone!
I need some clarification. In regards to the spelling of Kaju? I see some schools that use this: Kenpo and I see other school that use this:Kempo? Is one Chinese and the other is Japanese? Some please help me out. Thanks

Hope to see you all at the KSDI event in San Diego.

It is actually a topic already discussed on the Cafe, if you search on it I'm sure you can find it. or...... Here is the short version

M = kempo CHINESE    N = kenpo  Japanese

Whether the art is spelled with an N or an M is the same system. The letter N is a representation of the Japanese Interpretation of the Kenpo system, and the Chinese Interpretation is spelled with the M or Kempo.

Sijo Emperado, and the late GGM Aleju Reyes signed a document giving. GGM. Reyes first 2 Black belts, GM Don Nahoolewa and the Late GM Richard Peralta the right to use the spelling with an M - KAJUKEMBO.  Any schools that use the "M" can trace their lineage to these two men.

Another story is that, according to people who speak Japanese, the ideogram for "fist" (ken) is pronounced kem when followed by the idiogram (po) or "law".

This argument has gone on in the ken/m-po world for a while now.

The one thing that seems to have evaded almost everyone's radar is that the word Kajukenbo is an amalgam. It is a word that was put together from parts of other words (including an English one), so the way it was spelt originally was correct because it was never intended to be the "correct" representation of a Japanese one.

Subsequently, the Kajukembo spelling is also correct for the same reasons. These are both "Americanized" words the same way that the Japanese have changed the word television to what sounds like "terebision".

Professor Esteller

How have you been,  GM Melchor Chavez's School is spelled with an "M".  By the way we just finished our Derobio Escrima Seminar last weekend, we learned some more cool stuff.... 4 hours of hard core training.  Hope to see you all soon.
