Anyone know of this guy?
« on: June 22, 2012, 08:32:52 PM »
Hello everyone,

A friend asked me about this guy, as he lives in the same area.  My friend is with another system, and I think he is looking to train Kajukenbo.  Anyways, I looked at the website and can't find anything specific, other than a reference to "Gaylord Method".  I searched through the whole downline of GM Gaylord on the 2009 Tree and could not find him, though I could have just missed the name.

I did try to email him, and have not heard back yet.  Figured it may just be easier to ask here.  I know basically everyone here in the NW, and I have never heard of this guy - which doesn't necessarily mean anything.  I will probably end up just calling him over the next few days if I don't receive an email response.

I touched base (via e-mail) with Sifu O'Neill a little more than a year ago.  Not necessarily for pedigree or lineage verification; just complimented him on his website and his teachings and pretty much left it at that.  He did reply back.  Seemed like a nice enough guy.

Just assumed that he was teaching Kaju, among other arts.

He got his Brown belt from Brian Yoshii back in the say...he had trained there many years.  He moved after that for personal reasons, nice guy, can't remember his previous back ground in the arts.

I actually used his somewhere back in that era for a team fight, with another guy Cornell.....Team Oreo...we had a very good day in Oakland that Saturday...man I'm getting old.... ;D

As Prof Bono states O'Neil trained under Prof Yoshii in the 90's.. No idea what happened to him after I left for Texas. He was a good fighter, and a good brown belt, but no idea where or what he earned his black belt in 2009 or from who.. I just know he was a Gaylord Method trained guy under Prof Yoshii in the 90's.

FWIW.

Hey thanks guys.  I still have not heard back from him.  I have not tried to contact him again, as of yet, so that I am giving him plenty of time to reply.  So, at this point, all we know is that he made Brown Belt - not enough to be a Sifu and run a Kajukenbo school.  Hopefully he will respond with good info.

I was made aware of the cloud of doubt casted over me on this site. While I don't find it necessary to defend my pedigree or myself, for the sake of making others feel justified; I trained under Greg Lagera (Crazy Dragons) in the 80' then under Brian Yoshii in the 90's (brown belt) before moving to Portland Oregon where I earned my black belt in 2000 and my 3 degree in 2002 while working privately with my late instructor John Davies (Kang Duk Won), who trained under the late Ron Maletti.

I fly the kajukenbo colors because its in my blood.

I would like to thank Professor Bono, Dean Goldade and Sifu Ron Baker for their comments.

So you are a black belt in Kajukenbo?  No one is trying to offend you. If someone posts a question to the people on the cafe , asking if a person is a blackbelt and recognized instructor in Kaju.  That's a valid question. .

Hello sir,

I don't think anyone here was trying to offend you, however, it is important that we maintain the strength of our family.  I had emailed you privately and respectfully, however I still have not gotten a response.  That is why I came here to see what anyone knew of you.  As for me, I am a 6th Degree Sigung in Kajukenbo and am here in Portland, OR - as such, it is my job to clarify situations such as this here in the NW.

As asked in the previous comment, are a Black Belt in Kajukenbo?  If not, it would be a good idea to word your website in such a way that people will know that you have had training in Kajukenbo, but that you are not a Kajukenbo instructor.  If you are going to fly Kajukenbo colors, that is great, just be sure you are very clear with whatever the truth is.

As for defending your pedigree, yes it is necessary.  If anyone ever asks about my rank, lineage, etc, I am more than happy and prepared to give them the truth.  When people don't want to clarify these things, that's what casts doubt.

If we don't hold out Art close to us, what will the future of Kajukenbo look like?  Let's keep the family strong!!  Kajukenbo Forever!!

I take no offense and do understand the question. I've studying Kaju Gaylord Method for the vast majority of my martial arts life but I earned my black belt in the art of Kang Duk Wan. I made no claim to being a Kaju black belt. I've trained kaju for some 20 plus years and have no doubt in my ability to teach it, thats why I fly the clolors.

Hello sir,

Thank you for the clarification.  I understand that you may not doubt your ability to teach Kajukenbo, however, you do not have the authority to do so.  I just revisited  your website.  It is completely built around Kajukenbo, and misleads people to believe that you are a certified Kajukenbo instructor.  There is no mention of "Kang Duk Wan", why not?  If that is where you have rank, why not claim it?

No, you don't claim to be a Kajukenbo Black Belt anywhere on your site - however, the way your site is situated people will think that you are a Kajukenbo instructor.

I would suggest that you rework your site to clarify all of this.  Tell people that you have taken most of your training in Kajukenbo and that you teach elements of Kajukenbo in your curriculum, but that you style is actually "Kang Duk Wan" and not Kajukenbo.  If you want to claim to teach Kajukenbo, train under a certified instructor, get your rank there and then spread our great Art.

With that type of experience in Kajukenbo, especially under a exceptional instructor like Prof. Yoshi, I am sure it wouldn't take very long to get your Kajukenbo black belt, if you reconnected with a Kajukenbo school.

There are multiple Kajukenbo schools in your general area and all over the NW.  If you would like, you can contact me and I go over who they are and give you contact info for them.
