On upper rank testing, I understand the issue of the test being too long for spectators to sit through.  The first portion of our upper rank testing is closed to the public.  The last hour to hour and a half is open.

In response to Sensei Sue.  I agree that for those of us adults who have spouses, family and friends who stand by us, and tolerate us being gone many nights of the week at the karate school, and who put up with the endless ramblings of how much we love Kajukenbo, - when the time comes for that potential black belt promotion, they should be given an opportunity to be a part of it in some way, for the sacrifice they have given.

I've enjoyed reading the posts concerning this issue.  It's tough to decide how to handle parents.

I may have missed this.  In case someone mentioned it, I'm sorry, but do you (anyone) video tape the portions of the tests that are essentially closed to the public?  In this way, others can at least see the test (though on tape).

We record all testing.  How fun is it to watch someones black belt test and then pop in their white/purple belt test tape.  What a shocker, to see how far each of us come in our training!  We do allow people to watch the tapes at the school.

No, I haven't video taped tests but I am open to the idea. Professor Cerio used to video tape all our black belt promotions. As far as the parents go, I don't think anyone has the 'perfect' way to handle them, lol, so don't feel bad! It can be a challenge! :D

When I took my shodan test for Shotokan, I was performing Tekki Shodan, and on a press with one hand and inverted punch with the other, I wacked my elbow and my whole arm went a bit numb.  During the same kata, it may have even been the same punch, I nearly got my fist caught in my gi top.  However, when watching the video, I didn't notice either "problem."  During my Sandan test in Shotokan, I performed Gankaku ("Crane on a Rock"), one of my favorite katas.  Half-way through, my mind went blank, and for a split second I hesitated, but, once again, didn't notice it on the video.

On the other hand....it is fun to sit around with all those who tested and make fun of...I mean, constructively critique everyone's performance.

On a more serious note, my parents had never seen me do the martial arts.  Though they were there for nearly every baseball game or wrestling match, they never saw me throw one punch or kick...until watching the video of my Shodan test.  They really enjoyed it.
