Martial Arts and Satan?
« on: March 12, 2003, 07:25:24 AM »
:-[There's a website out now that is implying that martial artists are practicing witchcraft by focusing on inner strength and such.

They also show some martial arts logo's to point out the use of the yin and yang.  Boy was I supprised to see the Kajukenbo Coat of Arms displayed there.
Apparently, they've never read the Kajukenbo Prayer.

Check it out and give your thoughts

If this was not so patently stupid it would be frightning. There is another website called Landover Baptist which is a real riot too.

As if God cared about this crap. I believe that who really you are as a person and not what you hope to appear to those around you is what matters to a heavenly Diety. If they happen to be keeping score that is.

I just looked at that site... it is just ridiculous.  I sent them an email.  I will post it here if they respond.

Peace,

For the fun of controversy, I'll add my slant.

My CHA3-branch Kenpo organization recites the Kajukenbo prayer at the beginning and end of each class.  However, a majority of the students entering our club are initially uncomfortable reciting the prayer.
Most that stay for longer than six months recite the
prayer mostly to be part of the group.  Here's
my point.  If Kajukenbo includes a prayer with Christian
sentiment, then there is a religious element to the
organization.  On another note, if Chinese martial arts
did originate as a form of exercise during meditation,
then the physical discipline was secondary to the
primary:  meditation.  If that original meditation was
practied to reach a state of mind (emptiness) that didn't include God, then its goal excluded God.  So, while
I agree with the websites humorous points about
martial arts as a vehicle to a state without God,
I think that Kajukenbo includes God in that state.

I doubt that that Kajukenbo would have been targeted
had it not included the Chinese yin-yang symbol in
the organizational logo.

BTW, I doubt that many in martial arts is really
training for a fight.  So, I think that we are kinda
involved in a cult of some sort.  I'm definitely having
a good time.

It's logically incorrect to assume that you worship
Satan if you do not worship God unless you believe
that that absence of God worship is Satanism.
Is one a Satan worshiper if he is not aware of the existence of God?  I am not sure of this.  Did the
Christian missionaries believe that they were saving
Satan's children by converting them to Christianity?

This site states reasons why it is okay for Christians to study martial arts.  It makes a lot more sense than the other one.

Imagine if "Jason Voorhees" from "Friday the 13th" knew Kajukenbo, now that would be one "hell" of a website! ;D

The site appears to be down right now. However, I have to post my ministerial opinion on this.

I have a B.S. in Theology and frankly have been keenly aware of such concerns among the more conservitive Christians. I have heard of the stories of practitioners of the martial arts becoming "demon" possessed and while I cannot completely affirm that such things never happen I cannot ascribe that merely practicing the arts is neccesarily evil. The martial arts are the arts of War and any conservative Christian needs to be reminded that if the martial arts are "evil" then so is the military and the police force; so also were all the wars ancient Israel enguaged in at God's command.

I understand the whole concern of the the yin/yang thing. While to us, it is a symbol of the balance we practice in our art (combining strength and softness) however, it is also a religous symbol and carries the weight of that. Imagine for a moment if we replaced the yin/yang in our coat of arms with another religous symbol (a Christian Cross, a Davidic Star, or Islamic Moon and star) and you will get my drift. We can assign any meaning to that symbol that is unique to us but to the outsider it is still a religous symbol and associates everything we are with that religon.

So perhaps our response should not be so harsh but rather seize the opportunity to show such fundamentalist extremists who we are and where we stand.
